The Choreography
"Years ago, I spotted a little black-and-white dog in the window of a local children's store, and I fell in love. Seeing how into it I was, my husband, company composer Steve Gaboury, bought it for me for Christmas. The rest is history. Soloists who take on this role have varying degrees of difficulty with Bristol (AKA that doggie in the window). He can be a real stick in the mud if he's not in the right mood. But each dancer eventually develops an affection for him, as does the audience!"
— Artistic Director Marilyn Klaus
The Music
"Manhattan features a breezy piano theme, a muted trumpet, and feather-light drums. Mixed with strings and additional brass, this jazz combo creates a cool atmosphere and the melody reflects the soaring skyline of the city. The piece eventually drifts to a graceful exit with the dancer — via taxi, of course."
— Composer Steve Gaboury
The Costumes
"Once Marilyn discovered Bristol, I knew she would make a Manhattan someday. Ages before she started choreographing the dance, I found the perfect iridescent fabric: red satin on one side and the shades of the city at twilight on the other, with black flocked flower sprays all over it. She had a very specific vision for this character — Christian Dior's 'New Look' — and we went through several drafts before arriving at a final design. Every costume is always a work in progress."
— Designer Catherine Zehr
