The Choreography

"I have a major love for Latin music. Back in the 1980s, my husband (composer Steve Gaboury) and I used to go to the Corso — this club on East 86th Street that featured some of the city's best live bands every evening — and dance to our hearts' content. The performances were fabulous, and the women's bathroom was straight out of West Side Story, with ladies crowding the mirror to apply lipstick and rat out their hair. It was a real scene — and it inspired us to stage a regular Saturday night salsa cotillion at our apartment!"

— Artistic Director Marilyn Klaus

The Music

"When I was a student at San Francisco State University, percussionist Mingo Lewis (formerly of Santana) asked me to join his band. It was my first deep dive into Latin/salsa music, and I fell in love with it."

— Composer Steve Gaboury

The Costumes

"With this citrus-based dance cocktail, I had another opportunity to revive one of my designs for the school Marilyn once ran. Years ago, I made a group of three-tiered skirts in saffron, lime, and salmon sparkle tulle for her students. They moved beautifully in performance, and I knew that I could repurpose one of them for the female role in Cuba Libre."
